Ever since the lovely Letter Writing Party we had here earlier in the month, I've wanted to score my own small manual typewriter. I saw some really gorgeous vintage machines on-line, but really now, who has $595 to shell out for such a thing? I certainly do not and even if I did, I am far too frugal to shell out that kind of cash.
I thought I was going to wait until summer when the yard sales kick into gear. (That is, if summer ever comes . . . ) I told a few hard-core thrifting pals to keep an eye out for me. But last Saturday, on a whim I walked into the fabulous and funky Woolly Mammoth shop, (taxidermy anyone?) right in my very own neighborhood and practically tripped over this little beauty.
I then sent Ted on an additional mission to the shop to re-thread the ribbon and determine if it was in working order. He did and came back to report all looked up to snuff. So I purchased it. It cost me $35 and came with a sturdy carrying case. So I can carry it to your house if you'd like to write letters with me. Let me know. Hopefully this weekend I can make it to Pieritz Bros. in Oak Park, a delightful office supply shop that has been open in the same location since 1895. That's 116 years. I plan on purchasing some typewriter ribbon and perusing their small Pen Museum and ogling over their vintage fine writing instruments. Computers are great, they are huge part of my daily life, but I still love the sound of a typewriter and the way a pen feels in my hand.
