I have been sidelined by a nasty case of mastitis. Ugh. No, double ugh. Oh well, I am on the mend (and on antibiotics) but I am going to keep this very short. Ted and Sam (and me too, between hardcore napping sessions) have been completely enthralled these past few days by the Japanese film Naussicaa of the Valley of the Wind by Hayao Miyazake. What I have managed to catch is trippy and beautiful and weird and a little violent but also magical and haunting. Check out more about the film here. (Any insect-loving, spritely heroine is going to capture my heart. Even if the insects are ginormous things resembling tomato horn worms.) Ted and Sam are already fans of his film Porco Rosso and I've heard amazing things about My Neighbor Totoro. I had it in my head that Japanese animation was just silly and strange but this movie was so elegant and compelling, I think we might need to check out some others. We're becoming real Japanophiles around here with a love of all things from the Land of the Rising Sun. (Sam's favorite book to read at bedtime is currently "The Adventure of Momotaro, Peach Boy" which we picked up at the Ginza Festival last summer.) Oh well, from Udon to Ninjas, we're enjoying the exploration.
